Among Kingston’s top attractions and landmarks is its wealth of historic sites. The best place to experience Kingston’s history first-hand is at Port Royal, the ruins of the celebrated 17th century piracy haven. Once known for its wicked reputation and libertine atmosphere, Port Royal became the most infamous pirate centre in the Caribbean. However, a 1692 earthquake decimated the city, ultimately leading to the establishment of Kingston as the new capital of Jamaica. Today, many of Port Royal’s ruins can be explored such as Fort Charles, Fort Ricky and Saint Peter’s Church. A fascinating place to learn about Kingston’s early history, Port Royal offers much to see and do.

Kingston is also renowned for its vast array of museums, galleries and other cultural institutions. The National Gallery of Jamaica features a host of Jamaican artwork from a wide range of time periods while the Bob Marley Museum offers a huge collection of memorabilia from the late Reggae star. The Arawak Museum is another interesting museum worth visiting, featuring a bevy of exhibits pertaining to the indigenous Arawak people of Jamaica. Another must-see museum in Kingston is the People’s Museum of Craft and Technology, an institution that displays farming tools and pottery from the early days of Jamaica’s history. Lastly, don’t forget to check out the Devon House, a beautiful 19th century mansion that offers an interesting glimpse into Kingston’s past.

The city also plays host to a multitude of leisure, cultural and natural sites of interest. A top destination is the Hope Botanical Gardens, the largest botanic garden in the Caribbean and home to a brilliant variety of flora. Neighbouring the botanical garden is the Hope Zoo, one of the largest and most comprehensive zoos in the Caribbean.
